Well, quite a collection brilliant games there. Personally, I'm glad that Dead Space picked up the two audio awards, very well deserved. The atmosphere created throughout the game due to the audio cues is astounding, extremely tense.
No surprised Call of Duty 4 won three awards, it is the BAFTAs we're talking about here. Although perhaps it didn't deserve the award for story and character. It kept me playing which is more than some games do, however I was nowhere near as enthralled with the plot as I was with The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess for example. Considering one of the main characters dies abruptly around two thirds of the way through, kind of made it hard to get attached to the "story and characters".
I think Left4Dead was an obvious choice for the multiplayer award, and I'm happy it won it over Call of Duty 4. It was a bold move by Valve which paid dividends no end, proof being a BAFTA.
The biggest surprise to me was Super Mario Galaxy, regardless of the rave reviews. To be brutally honest, I didn't think any Wii games would win awards, let alone GotY! It didn't innovate to any great extent, and pretty much just plopped Mario into a different setting.
Wow, that turned into a number of incredibly brief reviews on award winning games. Leave you're own nano-reviews and opinions of the list below.
Story and character call of duty 4... bull plop. The story is forgetable at best and as for character... meh its typical of a war game. I admit the opening was immersive, but it became same old same old not too long into it.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you on the mario bull plop... Best game my buttocks. I'd agree with the L4D thing but my confidance in this bafta awards system has diminished entirely so I'm not gonna agree in protest.
In retrospect I can't really think of many great games this year... some good, some better then good, but nothing superb or astounding. Bad year overall... year of the sequel.
As for the rest... haven't played, no opinion.
Isn't every year "Year of the Sequel" now? This year we have Mass Effect and Assassin's Creed sequels at least, they're the only ones I can think of off the top of my head. Already had CoD5, RE5 this week too. DoW2 few weeks ago. Even prototype isn't that revolutionary (think Crackdown). Suppose there's Alan Wake and that last human alive game (I think) to see. Perhaps a new IP will take us by surprise and win a couple of rewards... (Dead Space 2... sigh).
ReplyDeleteI think the sequel business is to with producers being tight with their money and only picking sell-able games. There hasn't been many new IP's created this year. Maybe next year will be more promising.
